Butterfield Q & A

Where is the Butterfield site?

Butterfield is located on the northeast side of Luton. It fronts the A505 dual carriageway and benefits from access to the A1(M) and the M1. It is easily accessible from both Bedford and Luton.

Maps are available here:

www.butterfieldluton.co.uk/maps_travel.html

It is very near to the University’s Putteridge Bury campus.

What provision is there for car parking for students?

The University has now agreed a temporary parking solution for students studying at its Butterfield campus.

Parking provision has been granted by the site owners for the University to utilise some of the spaces behind buildings 220 and 230. It is important to note that 80 spaces will be available so parking here is by no means guaranteed.

Additional parking is available at the cemetery car park, approximately 5 minutes' walk away. Students and other visitors to the Butterfield campus are encouraged to make use of these parking facilities, rather than parking in residential streets.

A barrier will go up between spaces for buildings 210a (brown) and 210b (green), marked on the plan in red. These spaces will be reserved for Royal Bank of Scotland and The Easter Group. Students should not park in this area.

There will also be no access for students behind buildings 210, 220 and 230. Students should go straight over the roundabout and then left between buildings 230 and 260 for access to car parks and our buildings.

Alternatively, the University is running a shuttle bus from Luton town centre and train station to and from the Butterfield site daily. Go to current timetable

What public transport services are there to Butterfield?

Arriva bus services 100, 101 and 102 will make an additional stop within Butterfield Park from 20th April.

Who is moving there?

All the University of Bedfordshire staff (administration and academic) and students from Luton & Dunstable and Bedford hospital sites.

For academic year 2007/8 all continuing students at Bedford Hospital will be taught at the University’s Bedford campus.

What’s so good about Butterfield?

The building will be fully networked and equipped with the very latest technological features to support teaching, learning and assessment. The spaces available for teaching and learning have been designed to engage with the latest evidence-based methods. The building will house a modern learning resources centre, designed to facilitate both individual study and small enquiry and problem-based group work.

How much is being invested in it?

The University has invested £700k in this move.

Where can I see the plans?

Final plans are available here:

Ground Floor plan - PDF 1.1 MB
First Floor plan - PDF 1.0 MB

What learning facilities will be available to students?

Having made this major investment in teaching and learning facilities for healthcare the faculty is keen to further develop these to include state of the art simulation facilities. The Faculty is committed to ensuring that students have ample and safe opportunities to develop clinical skills for practice. We are currently exploring this with potential suppliers and would hope to be able report further on this once the work has been completed on the initial move to Butterfield.

What time will the building open daily?

Initially the building (including Learning Resources) will open from 8am – 6pm Monday – Friday. These times will be reviewed in due course as demand for facilities is established.

I am a member of staff:

How will timetabling work?

Teaching rooms at Butterfield will be managed centrally by University Timetabling. Rooms should therefore be booked in the same manner as existing space on Luton or Bedford campuses.

Room bookings can be made by e-mailing luton.timetable@beds.ac.uk

A timetabling exercise is currently underway.

What catering facilities will be available?

There is a cafeteria on the Butterfield Park which staff and students can use for snacks, drinks and meals.

Vending facilities will also be available within the Butterfield building for drinks and snacks.

Staff and students are also, of course, welcome to use any of the catering facilities available at any of the University’s sites in Bedford, Park Square or Putteridge Bury.

I am a student based at the L&D or Bedford Hospital sites:

Where will my practice be?

Your practice will continue to be based at your nominated hospital site.
