The landmark Park Square building in Luton - the largest campus of the University of Bedfordshire - will mark 100 years as an educational site in May 2008.

Park Square played a central part in the history of education in Luton with the University of Luton, Luton High School for Girls, Luton Technical School and Luton Grammar School all starting out in life on this site.

Luton Modern School and Technical Institute, the first educational building in Park Square, opened its doors in 1908.

Amidst many changes the Modern School continued to stand until the 1950s when, along with a jumble of other buildings around it, the past was swept away as Luton College of Technology was built.

On 1 May 2008, 100 years after the school opened its doors, academics, historians, former students and members of the local community will attend a special ceremony to commemorate its centenary.

The event will see the unveiling of a painting by local artist Doug Jones which shows the original building as it was in 1908, and an official archive will be launched where photos and items relating to the building will be formally collected.

The University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, will host the reception which will also include an exhibition of photos, brochures and newspaper cuttings from times past.

He said:  “Visitors to this site often don't realise that Park Square has a long tradition of education dating back to the 1900s.

“It's only right that we mark this special anniversary by exhibiting a selection of photos illustrating how Park Square has developed into the thriving campus that it is today. ”
