Environment policy
The
University of Bedfordshire is based at three main campuses in Luton,
Bedford and Putteridge Bury; and has a complement of around 23,000
students and 1,100 staff.
The University is
committed to continual environmental improvement, sustainability and
pollution prevention.
The University recognises that all of the
academic and associated activities it undertakes have impacts on the
environment at local, national and global levels.
The University is
fully committed to minimising these impacts as far as is practicable
and seeks the support of all its students, staff and others to
contribute to achieving environmental excellence.
The University is totally committed to developing environmental strategies in order to:
- Achieve a 20% reduction of scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2012 and 48% by 2020, against a 2005 baseline.
- Achieve a 25% relative reduction in water consumption per FTE student & staff by 2015 based on 08/09 EMS figures.
- Achieve a 25% reduction of waste sent to landfill by 2015 based on 08/09 EMS figures.
- Achieve a minimum BREEAM level of Very Good/Excellent in all new campus buildings and construction projects.
- Achieve fair-trade university status.
- Be
fully compliant with all UK and European environmental legislation and
environmental codes of practice for academic institutions.
- Reduce
carbon emissions from the procurement process and ensure that
environmental sustainability is embedded into the procurement policy
& manual.
- Implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) that is aligned with the principles and clauses of ISO 14001.
- Increase
the awareness of environmental responsibilities amongst staff, students
and visitors to the university through policy, procedures and training.
- Promote and encourage the use of sustainable forms of transport by staff and students.
- Implement a bio-diversity policy and procedures that help increase the bio-diversity of the surrounding area.
- Ensure continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System
- Ensure the minimisation of pollution.
