Arts Degree Show 2011

8 June 2011

Alumni at the Arts Degree Show

It was a pleasure to invite back to the University, art and design alumni to this year's degree show. The show is a celebration of work by final year students from courses as diverse as Fine Art and Animation. As usual the preview night concluded with a fashion show in the Carnival Arts Centre.

Alumni responded to invitations by email and on Facebook. It was great to see such a good response to view this year’s work. This is a trend we would like to repeat in years to come. Students, staff and graduates mingled in the exhibition spaces in Park Sq and the new campus centre.

This year’s show was also the last for retiring Head of Dept John Stephens. The exhibition continues until 10 July.

Applicant Open Days

16 April 2011

Alumni volunteers at the University Open Day

Saturday marked the last of six University undergraduate applicant open days. It was a great pleaseure to welcome alumni who had voluteered their time to help on the days. We hope that alumni will help to inspire the new intake of Bedfordshire students.

The Open Days were in February, March and April at both the Bedford and Luton campuses. The volunteers were able to pass on their experiences of studying at Bedfordshire and participated in a Q+A sessions with applicants and their parents.

For many it was their first time back to the Uni since the opening of the new campus centre. They all commented on the quality of the new building and how much the Uni had changed over the years.

We would like to thank alumni Hannah Johnston, Natasha Reynolds, Felicia Agbaw, Barbara Banda, Bilal Malik, Edward To and Casa Sharif.

The inaugural Train2game Graduate of the Year awards were presented on Monday.

Andrea Donafee, who studied her PhD at the University of Luton in 2003 and is now a Managing Director, received the GOYA first prize and Luo Luo was runner-up. Both are graduates of the Department of Computer Science and Technology and have demonstrated outstanding career progression in the five years since graduating.

Professor Maple said: “Andrea has risen through the company and was recently appointed Managing Director." He added: "Train2Game has been a big supporter of this University over the years and also of this University’s students. We owe the company a great debt of thanks.”

Summer 2010 graduations

July 2010

Bedford graduands celebrate

The University was a hive of activity this month with graduation ceremonies in Bedford and Luton.

Graduation is the first formal opportunity for the Alumni Relations Office to welcome graduates to the Alumni Association. As in previous years this takes the form of giving every student who attends the ceremonies a specially prepared goody bag. These bags contain a gift, sweets and a copy of the current alumni magazine.

Luton graduands celebrate

The Bedford graduations took place in the Harpur Suite and bags were distributed as students and their guest took refreshments in St. Paul’s church.

The Luton ceremonies took place at St. Mary’s. And to add to the excitement of the first day BBC Radio 5 Live was broadcast live from the grounds of the church. The Victoria Derbyshire programme discussed graduate recruitment and features interviews with the Vice Chancellor and graduands.

Steel Trust Bursary Awards 2009

27 November 2009

Steel Trust bursary recpient

The 25 students were each presented with a cheque from the Steel Charitable Trust by its Chairman Nicholas Wright. Local businessman Derek Ludlow CBE and Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE were also on hand to congratulate the students during a lunch at the Putteridge Bury campus.

The annual award is open to local students who have a record of academic excellence and also have financial need to help support them through their final year of study. Students have to submit an application for the bursary and, to be considered, need to demonstrate academic progression and financial hardship.

One recipient, Michelle Ramsumair, a final year Advertising and Marketing Communications student, said: “I was struggling with my Uni work because I had two jobs to help support my studies financially, which is why I applied for the bursary. I was so grateful to receive the money because I can now concentrate fully on my final year and put the award towards a Master’s degree.”

Two men drinking beer

University staff and alumni joined me for the 26th Luton Beer Festival at the Hightown Sports and Arts Centre, Luton. The festival is a great opportunity to meet old friends and try a wide selection of beers, ciders, perry's and bottled beers.

The photograph shows me with Paul Haysom (HNC Computer Studies, 1994) enjoying a glass of ale.

John Hegley performs at the Central Library, Luton

John Hegley's return to his home town as a hugely successful poet, ardent supporter of Luton, and honorary graduate of the University was a great success.

In a show which also marked National Poetry Day and the culminating event in local National Year of Reading, John entertained fans at the Central Library. Ably supported by colleagues from the Poptitions and the Luton Youth Wind Ensemble, John threw away the script and launched into a quick fire performance of poems and songs. John, ever one to try something new, even turned the table on his audience by asking them to write a poem.

Alumni from the fifties, sixties and seventies took the opportunity to share their memories and memorabilia (photos, etc.) in the beautiful house and grounds.

Rapunzel

21 – 24 December 2007

Especially commissioned by the University as the first production at the new 280-seater Bedford Campus theatre, Rapunzel enthralled audiences during its 4-night run in December. Commissioning and producing a 2 hour stage musical is usually the reserve of the West End and takes months of planning however, this modern adaptation of a fairytale was completed in a little over 2 months. But the Full House Theatre Company are no strangers to working with the University having put on shows at the old Bowen West theatre.

The Campus theatre was opened in October by HRH the Earl of Wessex.

Law and Accounting Conferences

7/14 November 2007

Howard McCalla with delegates

We were delighted to welcome back 3 alumni to conferences in Luton. Kharen Javed (LLB, 2005), Wayne McBean (LLB, 2006) and Howard McCalla (Accounting, 1994) spoke at events organised by the Centre for Personal and Career Development. Working with the Alumni Relations Office we emailed alumni for their support. They all spoke of their experiences since graduating to an audience of final students. Their advice and insight to life, post university, was well received and all answered a host of questions. The value of an alumni presence at these careers conferences is hard to diminish.

Walkways at Tower Bridge

27 October 2007

Guests at Tower Bridge

Over 150 alumni, staff and students enjoyed a spectacular evening high above the Thames on the Walkways of Tower Bridge. Alumni from far and wide toasted the evening with champagne and wondered at the fantastic London nightscape. The reunion was an outstanding success: guests were treated to a hot, fork buffet in addition to wine and beers from around the world. Whilst some guests mingled and chatted to friends on the west walkway others danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Deadly Avenger on the east walkway.

Naomi Wynter-Vincent, Head of Development and Alumni relations said,’ We are delighted with the event. It shows that alumni want to keep in touch and support the University. So many asked me ‘will you do it again next year’? Along with the Summer Ball at Putteridge Bury this has been one of the highlights of a busy events calendar’.

Wells and Young’s Brewery Tour

27 September 2007

Two men pulling pints of beer

Many students believe that coming to university is all about drinking beer. For those who still believed it even after years of assignment deadlines and exams the Alumni visit to the home of brewing in Bedford was the perfect event. Over twenty alumni sampled the delights of the Wells and Young’s brewery in an entertaining and educational evening.

After an informal tour of the plant and a commentary on the brewing process the guests enjoyed a buffet-style meal washed down with samples of Bombardier, Waggledance and Young’s Bitter. All beer was drunken sensibly and non-alcoholic drinks were also available.
