We’re pleased to be hosting another reunion in September for former staff and students of the Diploma in Geographical Techniques, a course set up in 1967 at the then Luton College of Technology.
The reunion will be held at our beautiful Putteridge Bury campus on Saturday 17 September 2011 and it promises to draw alumni from far and wide.
Former Course Managers David Cooper and Chris Coggins will be there to catch up with alumni of this pioneering course. Let’s try to beat the record of 100 attendees from the previous event in September 2007.

Staff, family members and over fifty alumni, attended the celebrations to mark the retirement of Senior Midwifery Lecturer Cynthia Stuart in May. In an afternoon of fun and laughter the guests were treated to stories of Cynthia’s life and career.
Cynthia’s colleagues prepared a ‘This Is Your Life’ style presentation that included mementos of her 33 year career and some surprise guests. This was followed by a specially written poem from Bella Madden and tributes from alumna Tina Howse and Cynthia’s family.
Cynthia was delighted with all the effort that went into the day and in keeping it a secret. Afterwards she said: “Wow, it was a great day. I was very pleased indeed.”

The first University nursing, midwifery and ODP reunion was a great success. Held at Putteridge bury in early June the event attached 19 alumni from different cohorts. Alumni were able to renew acquaintances over afternoon tea. The occasion also marked the first presentation of university pin badges.
Faculty staff were in attendance and guest of honour Registrar Jim Franklin distributed the badges. Both staff and alumni paid compliments to the venue and thanked staff or organising a successful event.
Photos from the day can been seen on the University alumni Flickr website.

The University was delighted to welcome a group of former exchange students back to Luton. The two day reunion, based in the Brooks Hotel, was the first time some of the students had seen each other in 10 years. Although a busy social schedule was planned they also popped into the University to catch up with lecturers and see the recent changes.
The reunion organised by Markus Buhlmann from Switzerland brought fellow students from Spain, Germany and even as far away as Japan. They were met at Vicarage Street by Paul Burns, Dean of Business and Robert Hadland, Senior Lecturer in business who showed them around the new business pods and explained how the University has changed in the last 10 years and the forthcoming redevelopment plans.
The group, from all parts of the world, came as part of a scheme which encouraged students to study abroad for a year in 1998. Although they returned and were awarded a degree by their own institutions these students have travelled far to relive their student days.

Former Luton students and members of staff associated with the degrees awarded by the University of London gathered at Putteridge Bury to celebrate the external degree courses taught at Park Square from the fifties to the early seventies. This coincided with the 150th anniversary of the London External system.
Fellow students took the opportunity to catch up on their news, as well as to find out how graduates from different years and courses have progressed. Alumni from the fifties, sixties and seventies took the opportunity to share their memories and memorabilia (photos, etc.) in the beautiful house and grounds.

A special reunion took place in September at our beautiful Putteridge Bury campus bringing together over 80 former staff and students (some from overseas) of the Diploma in Geographical Techniques, a course set up in 1967 at the then Luton College of Technology. Former Course Managers David Cooper and Chris Coggins were on hand to catch up with alumni of the pioneering course which enabled A-level geographers to pursue careers in cartography and other technical disciplines. Reunions of former students took place in March. On consecutive Saturday nights the bar of the Student Union rocked to the music of the last 17 years. Students from the nineties and since 2000 gather to relive experiences and meet old friends. The reunions were organised by Nathan Spencer and Gareth Liddiatt.
As a bonus this year's event had a free champagne raffle.

The music of the Britpop era was on the play list at the University of Luton Student Union on Saturday night, as dozens of former students gathered for a reunion, and to dance the night away to the hits that became the sound track to their student years.
The event, which was organised by former student Gareth Liddiatt, was one of the first to be held at the University, and aimed to reunite those who studied at the institution during the early to mid 90s.
Gareth, who studied a degree in Social Studies, said it was something he has wanted to do for some time.
“I often wondered what my old uni pals were up to, so I thought a reunion would be a good way to get to see them again,” said the 34-year-old. “I lost my address book with the details of all the people I knew back then, so I placed a bet with my girlfriend Rachel to see if I could track them down. Luton was a great place to study with a vibrant social scene, so I knew we’d have lots of interest.”
And that certainly was the case for the Advertising Manager who now lives in Flitwick. More than 350 former students got in touch after he posted details of the on the Friends Reunited website and on the University’s Alumni message board.
“I put a message up on the site to gauge interest and before I knew it, dozens of e-mails came through. A number of people said they’d be at the World Cup or on holiday, but the overall feedback was really positive.”
Gareth drafted in DJs Krister and Mike La Traille, who played at the Student Union throughout the 90s. Former members of the University’s champion rugby team and graduates from as far away as Manchester, Sunderland and Bournemouth also came along.
“Those who turned up on the night had a great time and said they wanted to do it again with a bigger bang,” said Gareth. “Plans are already underway to hold a bigger reunion next March, so people should watch this space.
“We are also hoping to make a sporting weekend of it with the current rugby team playing against the side that did very well in the mid-late 90s.
“I’ll be getting in touch with former students via Friends Reunited and the University’s Alumni Association to tell them all about our wonderful night last Saturday, and how the atmosphere in the SU is still as good as it was 12 years ago!”
