“I became Mayor of Luton.”
Councillor Haji Abid graduated from the University of Luton with an HND in Public Policy in 1994 before getting involved in local politics. In early 2005 he became Luton’s youngest Mayor.
Councillor Abid said that his university years were some of the happiest of his life. “I had a fantastic time at Luton. Some of my fondest memories are of this time. My lecturers were superb and I got the chance to study with students from all over the world.
“The University is a very important part of the town, both socially and economically and I’m delighted to see it go from strength to strength. It makes me very proud.”
In his role as Mayor of Luton, Councillor Abid recently visited the University’s Park Square campus where he was met by the Vice Chancellor and given a tour of the Learning Resources Centre, the Computing Department and the School of Media, Art and Design. He said: “I’m very impressed with the changes that have taken place since I studied here, in particular, the Learning Resources Centre looks amazing and the facilities are excellent.”
Interview took place in 2005.
