“I am a Service Engineer for ABB Ltd.”
David came to the University via Clearing and hasn’t looked back since. He said: “It was definitely time well spent and I would recommend it to anyone.”
During his time at Luton David saw the University grow both in size and stature: new courses being run, new modules on existing courses and also expansion from the main building, bringing with it better resources.
From his second year onwards David was a student warden at one of the Halls of Residence. The role involved helping students from overseas to settle into the new environment. He said: “Meeting people from many different backgrounds and helping them through their first year in a different country was very gratifying, especially when they returned the following year.”
David thinks that his degree has undoubtedly helped him to achieve since leaving university. “Not only through having a recognised qualification but also helping hone the skills developed at secondary education. For example, analysing problems and situation and providing solutions with the available resources, whether it be in the classroom or the office.”
When David left University in 1998 his first job was in the finance sector in a technical role, which involved creating and maintaining calculation tools for various products. However, when the company was taken over in 2002 he was made redundant and subsequently moved into engineering.
He has now been working for his current employer, ABB Ltd, a multinational engineering company, for the last 4 years. His role within the company is Service Engineer (Oil & Gas). As part of his job he has worked all over the world, including Azerbaijan, Georgia and Norway, both on and offshore work. David said: “I intend to carry on working in the engineering field and, fingers crossed, add a host more country stamps to my passport.”
Interview took place in 2006.
