"I am working as a Professional Golfer at Shrewsbury Golf Club."
James came quite late to golf - he started playing with a few friends in his final year at Luton - but he was already an ace sportsman, a mainstay of university football teams and, for variety, an expert in Tae Kwon Do, in which he once won the Welsh National Championships.
James's own footballing career was cut short by a knee injury, but he was working as a football coach before deciding to go into professional golf a year and a half ago.
As assistant professional at Shrewsbury, he teaches, practises, works in the club shop, and is allowed time off to play in tournaments.
He had a good maiden year in professional competition, playing in eight tournaments, and winning a little money.
"For the year ahead, I'm planning to go on playing - I'd like to qualify for the British Open.
But I also love teaching, and I want to do as much of that as I can," he said.
Interview took place in 2003.
