Judie Griffin: BSc Psychology

Judie Griffin

BSc Psychology, 1999

“I am now an Occupational Psychologist for Centrex (National Police Training).”

Judie studied a BSc in Psychology at the University of Luton from 1996-1999. She said “One of the reasons I chose Luton was because of its close proximity to London and for its good transport links. When I visited the University on one of the open days, I loved the atmosphere and I felt I would be happy living there. The student ambassadors were so helpful and the lecturers were more than happy to answer my list of questions”.

Judie also chose Luton because of its diverse student population. This was an important factor for her having lived in a very vibrant, multicultural suburb of London for some time. Judie’s degree of choice was accredited by the British Psychological Society, which would confer her with GBR on successful completion. This meant she could go on to further study or research after her degree.

Judie said “I enjoyed my degree and my time at Luton immensely and found it gave me confidence to pursue a career in psychology. It opened up many different possibilities and options in this competitive field. I went on to complete my MSc in Applied Psychology at Cranfield University which I feel I would not have been able to do without the solid grounding I received at the University of Luton”.

“The tutors and lecturers at Luton were approachable, friendly and very helpful. Unlike most of my classmates, I didn’t come to Luton straight from school, so some of the modules were new to me such as statistics and research methods. My lecturers’ patience and dedication enabled me to understand these, at first complex theories, which are now part of my job.”

Judie’s current job for Centrex (National Police Training) as an Occupational Psychologist means she is involved in designing and delivering the national assessment centres and exams for recruitment and promotion levels of the Police Service. She also conducts validation studies and designs training packages and delivers the various training courses around the country to Police and civilian staff.

She said “I enjoy my job and feel that it was worth all the time, effort and financial commitment. I enjoy being a professional and the status that comes with it. This would not have been possible without my first degree and the support and encouragement that I received while at the University of Luton. The experience was invaluable and if I had my time again I would chose exactly the same path”.

Interview took place in 2005.
