Laura Nelson from Belfast has always been interested in fashion. Studying a degree at the University of Luton has now given her the opportunity to pursue a glamorous career in this field.

Laura, who graduated with a first class honours degree in Advertising and Marketing in 2004, is now completing a Masters Degree in Fashion Marketing at the prestigious London College of Fashion.

“Fashion has always been a hobby – I love browsing through magazines looking at what this season’s colours and styles are,” said the 23 year-old, now living in Ealing, West London.

“I was interested in advertising and marketing, but few universities offered a combined degree in both subjects at that time. The course was available at Luton and I was aware that it had a good reputation for teaching, so I decided to go for it. Suddenly the disappointment of not getting my predicted A Level results seemed a long way away.”

During her second year at Luton, Laura got the opportunity to study part of her course in the French city of Lille which gave her a chance to brush up on her French and learn more about marketing from a French perspective.

“Studying in France was one of the highlights of my course,” she said.

Laura is now looking forward to starting a career in buying for high street fashion stores. She added: “Fashion is an exciting area as it changes so quickly. Unlike other areas of marketing, you are having to re-think everything every three months. It is also different as there are so many luxury brands."

“In a year’s time I hope to be earning a good salary doing a job I love. I’ve enjoyed the journey so far and I’m so glad I decided to study at Luton. Getting a first class degree was one of my proudest achievements to date.”
