"I am a tour guide at Chelsea Football Club."
Leah O’Mahoney from Croydon has her sights set on premiership glory after getting a job at Chelsea Football Club, where she will be working as a tour guide to thousands of visitors from around the world.
Leah believes her degree in Media Performance from the University of Luton helped her clinch her dream job with her beloved Chelsea Football Club.
Speaking about her new role, Leah said: “I have no doubt that my degree helped me because being a tour guide is all about giving a performance to a different audience every day. I’m a lifelong Chelsea fan so this is the perfect job for me. I’ve even met all the players.”
Famous footballers aren’t the only stars that the 22-year-old has rubbed shoulders with in recent times. Leah also met a very well-known face in the world of broadcasting before she graduated.
For her final year project, she wrote, directed and performed in her own cabaret show with three fellow students. One of the first to see the show was former Director General of the BBC, Greg Dyke, who was visiting the University for the opening of its new School of Media, Art and Design.
Leah’s journey to Stamford Bridge was one of drama itself. After graduating from the University of Luton, she spent the summer in Italy teaching drama to schoolchildren, where she discovered language wasn’t a barrier when it comes to fairytales.
Leah said: “The children had a great time learning their lines in English and I got the chance to learn Italian. We performed Snow White, Cinderella and Goldilocks, as well as Romeo and Juliet for the older children - it was the best and most rewarding experience of my life."
“I heard about the job from a fellow Luton student who had graduated before me. He told me how much fun it was, so I decided to go to the audition, which went really well."
“During my time in Italy I got the opportunity to travel all around the country and I visited Milan, Venice and Brescia. It was fantastic.”
For now, Leah is revelling in her new role at Chelsea but already has her sights set on stardom on the pitch, but not as a footballer!
“I would like to work for Chelsea TV and I have already met the crew,” said the Blues fan. We got on really well, so hopefully one day I can perform in front of the camera. I’ve already lined up some work experience at Sky Sports to learn the necessary skills."
“The University has a subject area devoted to television presenting and vocal training which was great, but I’d like to know what it’s like to broadcast live. Some of my friends from my course are already working in television and radio, so who knows where I’ll be five years from now.”
Interview took place in 2005.
