Nikki Redfern: BA Hons Business and Finance with Travel and Tourism

Nikki Redfern

BA Hons Business and Finance with Travel and Tourism, 2000

Nikki Redfern

"I am now a Project and Program manager for Dell, Sydney, Australia."

Nikki Redfern’s experience at University has been opening doors and providing her with opportunities ever since.

She said: “I really believe it's got me in the door for many interviews – the fundamentals helped in understanding business and industry operations - and the life experience I had and the people I met whilst at Luton have been the foundation of the rest of my life.”

Nikki has been in Sydney, Australia for four years, working for Dell as a project/program manager for two and a half of those. Her job has taken her to Malaysia, China and on assignment for a year in India.

She loves her life there – she lives with her fiancé, who proposed while they were visiting the Taj Mahal, and they are getting married next year in the local wine region. They enjoy the beach life and café culture of Australia and Nikki’s hobbies include diving, running, the Gym, music and dance.

It seems a long way from the University but travel was Nikki’s aim. It was the course selection of Business and Finance with Travel and Tourism options at Luton that drew her interest.

She said: “On my first visit, the campus seemed more alive than any of the other uni's I visited. There was a really mixed group of people - and the core subjects were merged with other course participants which gave us plenty of exposure to other students. The Student Union was good - and there were plenty of "student" activities in the town.

“After I graduated I went to work for easyJet in it's start-up days helping to set up and run the reservations centre. From there I went to work in IT at Britannia Airways.

“Then I decided to travel through Asia to Australia to fulfil personal travel goals - and ended up staying here.

“I have done some industry training courses and now I am planning to start a part time postgraduate course in Project Management at University of Technology in Sydney in March.

I would urge any student joining the University that they should make the most of the study time they have - you get out what you put in and it can set you up for life.

“Get involved in extra-curricular activities, especially sports and other events - I didn't do enough of this. Don't be a bystander!

“Make friends. I am still in touch with some friends I made for life - and even have one of them living here in Sydney.”

Interview took place in 2004.
