“I now work in IT for Norwich Union”
Darren Taylor’s dream is to be in Vegas – using his skills on the stage as a magician.
While he is working on that ambition, he lives in Hove, works in IT for Norwich Union and tours with a magic show when he can.
He has two degrees from Luton, a first in Geography and an MSc in Internet Technologies, graduating with distinction in 2001.
Darren said: “I’m now an IT Graduate Trainee for Norwich Union – that’s the official title, anyway. I design and develop IT systems, ensuring that the business continues to run effectively.
“I greatly enjoyed my time at Luton, have some very fond memories and am pleased that I supported my home university by studying there.
“I think the skills you learn from your degree are invaluable – especially the transferable skills like the ability to effectively analyse/evaluate information and to build structured arguments.
“My degrees at Luton really helped me to develop these skills. I think this is demonstrated in the fact that for my current job position there were only 12 vacancies and thousands of applicants nationally – so they seem to have been useful to me!
“I’m still in contact with people from both of my courses and we meet up regularly. I now live in Hove – right next to the sea – but I’ve developed a serious hatred of seagulls, especially when they wake you up at a ridiculous hour in the morning with that hideous screeching sound!
“I’m also a part-time magician – with a particular liking for stage magic. I’m part of a magic show which tours around various places. I reckon one day I’ll be working in Vegas – and I won’t be flipping burgers!”
