“I am Programme Administrator for Vertex at Westminster City Hall.”
Katy studied Media Performance with Scriptwriting at the University of Luton and graduated in 2003 with a 2:1. She looked at similar courses at universities across the country and decided that Luton had the best course for her. She wasn’t disappointed and loved the course and the university environment.
Katy said: “The script writing and theory lecturers were very supportive and interesting and encouraged me to develop my talents!”
The course gave Katy a more positive outlook on life. It was something she wanted to do for herself, rather than a traditional degree which she had considered in the past.
Coming from a small town in the countryside, Katy was also thrilled to have nightclubs, an art centre and a cinema to hand in Luton.
Katy’s fondest memories of her time at the University are designing costumes out of cleaning accessories for her Costume module and the media student parties!
After graduating, Katy worked for a European Social Fund project at the University, before taking a year out in Norfolk to work as a mental health support worker. Following a move to London, she worked as an office manager before taking on her current role.
Katy now works for Vertex, a subsidiary of United Utilities, as a contractor. She is the Westminster Programme Administrator for the Vertex Westminster Partnership, concentrating primarily on the Wireless City Project. The job combines administration and PA duties, which includes running the company flats for seconded staff, and event management. “I wanted a job that was a challenge, where every day was different, and with a certain degree of flexibility. This job certainly gives me that,” Katy said.
As well as working, Katy is also studying part-time for an MA in Television Scriptwriting. She said: “I loved the scriptwriting part of my degree so much that I decided to carry on with it.”
Katy’s hopes for the future are to bring Britain back to the forefront of science fiction and fantasy television production. She is planning to move to Somerset next year with her partner to concentrate on her writing and would like to set up an arts and crafts business.
Interview took place in 2005.
