"I am now a teacher."

Denise Xiao has been teaching in Shanghai, her hometown, but not in her home language. She teaches international students in English at a Sino-Canadian high school.

She has enjoyed the experience so much, she is now emigrating to Canada, where she will be studying for a Canadian teacher’s licence.
It took a while to find out that teaching was what she wanted to do. Denise explained: “The day after I graduated from Luton, I flew back to Shanghai, my hometown. After working for a famous computer company as a software engineer, and for a TV station in public relations, I realised my talents hadn’t been fully developed.”

“I found a job as a teacher in one of the key high schools in Shanghai – this is their international division. I was able to do this with my UK educational background – I also have a BSc in Physics from the Shanghai teachers’ university.”

“I taught physics, algebra, geometry and computer studies – in English – for two years. All the teaching material was from the USA, and all the children were from different countries such as the USA, the UK, Canada, etc.”

“My pupils have gone on to do good things – one of the grade nines is now in a military school in the USA, one went to a UK high school and one is in a top girls’ school in the USA.”

“During the last half-year in Shanghai, I’ve been teaching in a Sino-Canadian high school, teaching maths, science, computer studies and drama – all in English. All the teaching material is from Canada.
“It’s been a great experience and now I am emigrating to Canada where I would like to carry on teaching – I want to study education and get a Canadian teaching licence.”

“Looking back, I really benefited from my studies in Luton, and I’d like to take this chance to thank all my teachers for their help and support.”

“I would really like students from the class who studied the MSc Internet Technology from October 2000 to April 2002 to get in touch.”
