Innovative approaches to language testing research

BAAL TEA SIG is holding a one-day conference (preceding the Language Testing Forum 2011) on the theme of ‘Innovative approaches to language testing research’. Two invited papers will focus on the use of new technologies in phonetics and reading research and their implications for language assessment.

Five reflective practice sessions (20-minute papers + 15-minute Q&A and feedback) and two poster presentations are planned, where a panel of experienced language testing researchers will provide constructive feedback on the presenters’ studies (completed or work-in-progress) in a friendly manner.

  • 12:20 – 12:55 Session 3Explaining item difficulty with random item IRT models: an example using vocabulary test data (Karen Dunn, University of Lancaster)
  • 12:55 – 13:05 Introduction to posters - Korean and Spanish test-taker attitudes toward task planning time in the TOEFL iBT speaking component (Garrett Byrne, University of Bristol) and Predicting IELTS scores using measures of Lexical Richness (Theodosia Demetriou, University of the West of England, Bristol)
  • 13:05 – 14:20 Lunch + Poster sessions
  • 14:20 – 15:00 Invited paper - Using eye-tracking technology to research L2 reading (Dr. Lynda Taylor, Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment, University of Bedfordshire)
  • 15:00 – 15:35 Session 4 - Using eye-tracking methodology to measure L2 vocabulary acquisition from reading (Ana Pellicer-Sanchez, University of Nottingham)
