I was appointed Associate Dean at the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School in October 2005 and Professor of Medicine at the University of Bedfordshire. I have been an NHS consultant in general medicine, geriatric medicine, and diabetes for 16 years. I am a WHO-recognised Expert in Diabetes.
As a senior medical practitioner with both a national and international standing in Medicine (Geriatric Medicine and Diabetes), my strengths are those of a strategic thinker, marked adaptability, commitment to team working, and excellent communication skills.
In addition, I have a strong background in leadership of medical education and training at a postgraduate level at both a regional and national platform, as well as significant experience as an undergraduate teacher and module leader.
My academic background includes experience in basic science, clinical research and, more recently, in health services research. I held a full Endowed Chair in Birmingham over 6 years and a Hon Professor of Medicine post at Warwick for 4 years before this current post.
I have been a Visiting Professor of Medicine at St Louis (USA) and British Columbia (Vancouver). In November 2004, I was made Visiting Professor of Medicine at Oxford Brookes University. I have extensive experience in examining both at MB BS level but also at MSc, MD, and PhD levels. I was appointed Deputy Dean at the Beds & Herts Postgraduate Medical School in 2007.
I have been a senior medical examiner at the Royal College of Physicians (NVE) and have sat on various advisory boards and editorial boards. I advise the Department of Health, Diabetes UK, and the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) on important health-related issues.
I sat on the BGS national council as CPD Director previously and the national committee of ABCD (Association of British Clinical Diabetologists). I am a scientific reviewer for major geriatric and diabetes journals, and I am Section Editor for Geriatric Science, at the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging.
