Black people have always been at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting against oppression and paving the way for change. However, despite their countless contributions to society, the achievements of black women, in particular, have too often been overlooked or forgotten. And that is why this year's theme is #SalutingOurSisters which aims to highlight the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change and building communities. Take a look at our inspirational female student and staff case studies below, or for more information about BHM23's campaign visit www.blackhistorymonth.co.uk.

Here at the University of Bedfordshire, we have built on our own campaign – Proud To Be Black. We have invited our Black students, staff and alumni to share what makes them proud, what their heritage and culture means to them, and how allies can support their Black peers, learn more and help instigate societal change. As well as all of that, this month we are privileged to host An Evening With Doreen Lawrence, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, OBE.

Through our case studies, events and activities taking place during Black History Month 2023, we aim to celebrate and show support to Bedfordshire’s diverse student and staff community. As well as remembering the contributions and achievements of Black people throughout history. Black Britons at the University and across the UK continue to make history in their own ways every day, which makes us incredibly proud.

Our students & staff are 'Proud To Be Black'!
