Summary
This course focuses on surfaces (materials, colour and texture), furniture and lighting. You will study colour theory, print pattern design, silkscreen printing, furniture design, lighting design and exhibition design. You will work both collaboratively and creatively with students and staff from the fashion design course.
This course offers an exciting and wide ranging education, enabling you to develop your own design interests whilst gaining a rich variety of technical, presentational and professional skills. You will be encouraged to take creative risks and think in radical ways about your project work.
The course is distinctive in that it shares key aspects of its curriculum with the degrees in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Illustration.
This emphasises the links between interior space and form, fine art installations, typology and colour theory and enables you to develop knowledge and skills across a range of two and three-dimensional disciplines.
The curriculum includes, wherever possible, opportunities to enter a variety of prestigious national and international design competitions.
The study of the theory and context of art and design is linked closely with the studio practice through the 'Contemporary Issues' and 'Dissertation' modules.
Throughout the year a range of guest speakers will give talks on art and design matters as part of the Platform Lectures. International field trips will be organised across the disciplines wherever possible.
You will be expected to visit a wide range of exhibitions and buildings of interest. This is fundamental to the understanding of contemporary design and art practice.
The University is extremely fortunate in having excellent transport links with London where many important exhibitions are held and many examples of fine architecture and interior design are to be found. There are also opportunities to take part in international field trips.
Areas of study include:
- Exhibition Design
- 3D Model-making
- Basic Web Page Design
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
- Digital Image Creation and Manipulation
- Digital Film Editing
