Summary
The MSc by Research enables you to study a topic in depth.
The course is designed to develop in you an understanding of the research process, the ability to analyse and constructively augment a particular research area and to provide an experience of communicating research results in written and oral form.
The course is designed for graduates from a computer-related discipline who wish to investigate research as a possible career or who wish to extend their knowledge of one particular facet of computing (possibly because it is difficult to find a taught MSc that fulfils their individual needs).
Why choose this course?
Research within IRAC is expanding rapidly. Two custom-built laboratories have been opened during the last three years to accommodate the additional numbers of research students. This provides a vibrant and multinational environment within which research can flourish.
The Institute has had considerable recent success in attracting research funding from EPSRC and the European Commission and this has also provided increased momentum to expansions of the research infrastructure and research activities of the Institute.
The three research centres:
Centre for Computer Graphics & Visualisation (CCGV)
Centre for Research in Distributed Technologies (CREDIT)
Centre for Wireless Network Design (CWiND) are all regularly receiving research funding and provide a range of exciting research opportunities at MSc by Research, MPhil and PhD levels.
Career Opportunities
You will be well qualified for positions that require an advanced understanding of computing in the area you selected, particularly where such posts require independence of thought and analytical skills.
Further details about the course
The precise content of the student's programme of study will be negotiated with the project supervisor and will be subject to approval by the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing, as occurs with applications for MPhil and PhD study.
The precise area of study will normally lie within the spectrum of research activities being undertaken within the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing at the time.
Students on this course will participate in the standard programme of research training offered to all research students.
Entry requirements
A good honours degree in a computing-related discipline.
