Summary

This course offers the opportunity to become a first class primary school teacher. The faculty has a long established partnership with approximately 500 schools. Students undertake professional school-based experience in at least five different schools of approximately 40 days per year.

The course combines the theoretical elements of primary education with extensive practical experience. It develops the confidence, creativity and competence in teaching skills required to stimulate the minds of primary age children. In many areas, the course content exceeds the basic requirements for training as specified by the Training Development Agency.

This course combines theoretical elements and practical experience to develop confidence, creativity, and competence in teaching skills. It consists of four strands:

Perspectives, Values, Principles and Beliefs (PVPB)
Learning and Teaching: (A) Maths and English focus
Learning and Teaching: (B) curriculum focus
Professional Development Portfolio (PDP)

Later on in the course students can focus on an area of special interest, which may be curriculum or issues-based.

Areas of study include:
Curriculum models
Practical experience
Subject areas
Maths and English for all
Optional elements at stages in the course including early years, primary modern languages (French) and subject groupings

As well as placements in schools, students undertake placements in a variety of learning environments. To date those have been in special educational needs provision, with educational psychologists, the library service, education departments in museums and art galleries and also in field study centres.

Why choose this course?

Newly designed innovative course with new models of partnership based on our own University of Bedfordshire characteristics
In many areas course content exceeds basic requirements for training as specified by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA)
Long-established partnership in teacher education with partner schools
