Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Stroke have become a key priority for health in the Western world, with the United Kingdom having one of the highest rates of circulatory disease in Europe (WHO, 2000). This has made CHD a major challenge for health care providers and policy makers to make improvements and initiatives in managing and combating the disease.
Summary
This course is designed to focus upon the care provision for individuals with coronary heart disease. The emphasis in practice will be on developing your competence and confidence in the assessment of needs and the required interventions among individuals with coronary heart disease. There will be opportunities to explore acute and long-term patient needs with concern for the increasing morbidity among populations associated with ageing, lifestyle and socio-economic status, and technologically advanced interventions in the complex context of care.
To deliver an effective patient centred and holistic programme of care, you need to develop an ability to recognise the importance of liaison mechanisms and the contribution made by interagency networks. This should ensure that services are delivered efficiently and effectively, whilst taking on board the recommendations from the Audit Commission (1999) regarding first assessment. If you are to achieve appropriate assessment and diagnostic skills, you will require a combination of theoretical and practical experience. This will enable you to develop the skills required for safe and effective practice via the process of analysis and synthesis, using a reflective approach.
Within your role it is important to focus on the promotion of health and wellbeing by empowering individuals and communities to take responsibility for their own health. This will be achieved by the use of interpersonal skills in the capacity of a counsellor, advocate and advisor helping to achieve and maintain optimum health.
The factors outlined above are indicative of the need not just to build upon your established skills and expertise but also to develop new approaches to coronary care practice.
This course aims to equip you with the necessary skills, knowledge and value base to enable you to function effectively in coronary care settings and become an autonomous, reflective, research minded and innovative practitioner.

Dissertation/project and research
The skills and capabilities necessary to successfully complete this course require you to be able to demonstrate your ability to critically reflect on the knowledge and skills gained. This requires that you develop effective problem solving skills and apply these to practice in a manner which enables you to critically analyse the variety of evidence available in relation to your own area of practice.
The QAA have identified subject specific learning outcomes in the form of benchmarks to guide higher education curriculum developers to produce programmes of study which demonstrate graduateness. Therefore, this award has been mapped against the benchmarks for nursing.
Graduateness will therefore enable you to lead and develop practice which is safe and effective in accordance with all the best possible evidence.
