Summary

The demand for sports therapy continues to grow, with graduate practitioners offering primary injury care and the assessment, management and rehabilitation of sports injuries.

This course combines academic requirements with the vocational application needed to practice on a
professional basis. The course is underpinned by sports science, physiology, biomechanics and psychology.
The course consists of scientific content including functional anatomy, exercise physiology and sports biomechanics. There is also strong emphasis on core subjects combining theory and practical skills, including sports massage and advanced soft tissue techniques.

A research strand ensures a full understanding of ‘evidence based practice’, culminating in an independent research project in stage three, and more than 50 per cent of the course consists of Sports Therapy areas of study.

Opportunities exist to work in the sports massage clinics run on-campus; with practitioners at local sports clubs; and with the University’s sports teams. The course has external international recognition through the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT).

We are also seeking approval for students to gain eligibility to join the Sports Massage Association.

You will benefit from working in our well equipped physiology laboratories and sports therapy suite and gain practical experience in our on-site sports massage clinic.

Opportunities also exist to work with other practitioners at local sports clubs and with a variety of University sports teams.

Areas of study include:
