All the units offered are open to you – but as the six TEFL units are compulsory, your final degree certificate highlights the teacher training elements of your course.
The course is intellectually stimulating, but also practical in orientation. By the time you graduate, you will feel confident of starting a teaching career in a language school in the UK, or in a school, college or university abroad. Our graduates are teaching in more than 20 countries besides the UK.
But if you change your mind about a teaching career, this degree will help to prepare you for many other careers requiring high-level communication skills.
Specialists in linguistics guide you through an analysis of both spoken and written English, while staff with media experience share their expertise on the language of radio and newspapers.
Classes are multinational, with students from all over Europe, the Far East and elsewhere, as well as the UK. This will develop your understanding of intercultural communication, which you can apply in teaching, in an international business career, or in the media.
Areas of study include:
- Grammatical and Lexical Systems of English
- Patterns of Natural Speech
- Communication of Meaning
- TEFL Materials Development
- Teacher and Student Motivation
- Teaching and Learning

The Certificate in TEFL
You can follow our Certificate in TEFL in one of two ways:
A 4-week full-time intensive course held every July (see separate description)
or
A part-time course running two evenings a week from September to June (see separate description).
This course is for you if you are in a hurry to qualify, or if you already have a degree. It is very practical in orientation, and has been designed to develop your teaching skills to a level where you can start your career with confidence.
The course components include lesson plans and planning, selecting and adapting teaching materials, classroom management, teaching grammar, ‘language awareness’, exams and testing, syllabus and course design.
The certificate course has been planned to meet British Council expectations for a ‘TEFLi’ or initial teaching qualification, the entry-level qualification for English Language Teaching.
For example, it contains assessed teaching practice; this means you will be able to demonstrate to any future employer that you have had significant teaching experience, and you will be able to supply a grade, and your tutors’ reports.
Over the years, the course has attracted a wide range of applicants, including new graduates, people planning a change in career direction, and others planning to retire overseas but intending to supplement their income teaching English.
