What our students say

Claire Stubbs, BA Hons TV Production (2009)

Did your course prepare you for work?
Claire Stubbs

Definitely because it is such a hands on active degree. In particular the final project prepares you the most as you learn how much hard work goes in to making programmes.

What advice would you give current students wanting to work in TV?

Work experience, work experience, work experience!! It's so vital that you get lots during your degree otherwise you will have to start once you have finished.

What programmes have you worked on so far?

As work experience while I was a student, I worked on GMTV and Teachers TV.

After graduation I went on to be an office runner at Objective Productions working on 'Derren Brown' and 'The Greatest Ever 3D Moments'.

Currently I am a production runner on Endemol's 'Big Brother' until September 2010.

What's the best thing about your job?

The contacts you make and the atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly with the same interests.

Luke Jessop, BA Hons Dance and Professional Practice

How are you finding the course?
Luke Jessop

I love it here! I’ve made so many different friends and the course is excellent. Bedfordshire was my first choice because the course seemed to fit my career aims and I’m extremely happy to have been accepted.

What do you particularly like about the course?

I like the range of aspects the course offers, from different approaches to choreography to dance on-screen. It’s really opened up my mind to the wider world of dance.

What are your ambitions?

I’m hoping to become a professional choreographer/dancer with my own dance company. I’ve already started my own company with a few of my friends and we’re set to perform in the local area soon.

How do you rate the Performing Arts and English Division?

My lecturers are so cool! They’re really down to earth and they all have professional backgrounds, so I feel as though I’m learning form people who understand what I’m going through and know what they’re talking about.

Kerry Culling, BA Hons English and Theatre

Why did you choose the course that you did?
Kerry Culling

I have a passion for English , I chose the theatre as an added interest.

Which practical aspects of the course did you enjoy the most and why?

The stage productions have been immensely enjoyable because it has really taught me so much about myself. My confidence has soared. I love both aspects of the course. I have now discovered the joy of being on stage. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What do you think of the facilities that you used?

The facilities provided for performance arts are fantastic.

Would you recommend this course to others?

Absolutely. English and Theatre is perfect for people that love the diversity it has to offer.

How does this course prepare you for employment?

I have many options on which direction to take. The University offers career advise to guide me. . I have also developed tools and skills that I will continue to develop and carry for the rest of my life.

How would you finish this sentence: The University of Bedfordshire is…

An exciting and innovative faculty in which to study.

Imran Choudhury, BA Hons Journalism

Why did you choose Beds?
Imran Choudhury

I was looking for a Journalism course that would give me a head start ion my media career and the University’s subject league tables looked good. Later, I went to an open day, where I was impressed by the Media department’s facilities. It just felt like a professional environment.

Are you enjoying the course?

Yes - very much. The lecturer’s don’t get on your nerves like my teachers used to do. Here, they treat you like an adult and expect you to work accordingly. At the same time, they’re available and willing to help.

What are your ambitions?

I’d like to work for an international media organisation, such as the BBC or AlJazeera. I’m not interested in being famous, but I’d like my work as a journalist to be acknowledged. Maybe later I could progress to being a documentary film-maker.

How well do you think you’ll be equipped to get a job?

Very well equipped. The course has taught me that journalism is a 24/7 occupation that brings something new with it every day. I’m now much more aware of my surroundings and less inclined to take people at face value. And, as my lecturers have drummed into me, I’m constantly expanding my network of contacts. As long as I put the effort in, anything is possible.

Jack Cornell, BA Hons Media Production

What is your particular area of interest?
Jack Cornell

Radio, radio and radio. When I began my Media Production course, I rather fancied becoming a film director. But then I did my course unit in radio and became almost instantly hooked on the idea of becoming a radio broadcaster.

Why did you choose Beds?

The Media Production facilities looked really great – especially as I wasn’t sure what I was going to specialise in. These days, I spend most of my available time in the radio studio – my second home.

What would you say is the best thing about your course?

Every day brings something new and different. There’s certainly no excuse for getting bored in Media Production.

What does it feel like when you get behind the microphone?

Fantastic. It gives me a real adrenaline rush -  a surge of energy that lasts as long as I’m on air. Using the equipment is now second nature to me, and I’m really looking forward to attacking the airwaves when I graduate later in the year.
