Fumiyo joined CRELLA in 2009. She has a PhD in Language Testing, an MA in Applied Linguistics and a Postgraduate Diploma in TEFL from the University of Essex.
Her main research interests lie in the nature of co-constructed interaction in various speaking test formats (e.g. interview, paired, and group formats), task design and rating scale development. Her PhD research focused on conversational styles in group oral tests, considering the impact of candidate characteristics, group sizes, and task types. She also has a keen interest in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, especially Conversation Analysis and statistical analyses in language testing and applied linguistics research.
Fumiyo's recent publications include the book, The co-construction of conversation in group oral tests (forthcoming, Peter Lang), book chapters in O’Sullivan, B. (2011) and Taylor, L. (forthcoming) and research papers in Cambridge ESOL Research Notes (2006), ELT Journal (2008) and Language Testing (2011).
She has also presented her research at a number of national and international conferences, such as the Language Testing Research Colloquium (LTRC), the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA), the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL), the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) and the Language Testing Forum (LTF).
Her MA dissertation received the IELTS MA Award 2005. The award is for the Master’s level thesis which was considered as making the most significant contribution to the field of language testing in that year. Since its inception in 2000, it was the first and so far the only time that the award went to a student studying at a university in the UK.
The courses she has taught since 2005 include language testing, research methodology and data analysis for MA and BA students in TESOL/TEFL/Applied Linguistics and for the Monkasho Group (secondary school teachers of English sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education). She is currently supervising one PhD student as a Director of Studies and eight PhD students as a second supervisor.
She is a communications officer of the British Association for Applied Linguistics, Testing, Evaluation and Assessment Special Interest Group (BAAL TEA SIG).
