Tony Green joined CRELLA in 2006. He is the author of IELTS Washback in Context. He has a PhD in the area of language testing (focussing on test impact and academic literacy) from the University of Surrey, a Masters in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Southampton.
At CRELLA he is involved in managing funded research projects, in carrying out language testing consultancies and in supervising research students.

Before joining CRELLA Tony worked for four years as a test Validation Officer at Cambridge ESOL Examinations (the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate) where he was responsible for the validation of the IELTS test and for tests of Speaking skills. He has lectured in Language Testing at universities including the University of Cambridge, Oxford Brookes University and the University of North London and has delivered training for the Association of Language Testers in Europe.
Tony has extensive experience as a researcher, teacher and teacher trainer and has worked at all stages of test development and delivery including as a test designer, as an item writer and as an examiner for tests of speaking and writing skills. He has participated in a number of test and assessment development and validation projects around the world for clients including the British Council and for universities in a number of countries.
Current research and consultancy interests include the relationship between assessment and learning, the assessment of literacy skills and practical test development. Current projects include the development of English language placement tests, an investigation of IELTS item writing processes and the development of reference level descriptions for English to supplement the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (English Profile).
