David Barrett, Professor of Applied Social Science

Professor David Barrett

David is Professor of Applied Social Studies and Dean of Partnerships at the University of Bedfordshire. Academically he is aligned to the Department of Applied Social Studies.

In his senior manager role he gives the University academic leadership and vision for the development of strategic alliances, partnerships and joint ventures with Partner organisations.

Research and Teaching

David is a recognised international authority on young people who are sexually exploited through the sex industry. He contributes to teaching in several areas, these include research methods, criminology and social work.

He also contributes regularly to international conferences. He continues to supervise undergraduate dissertations and has a number of postgraduate research students 3 of whom are studying for PhDs. He remains 'Research Active' from the latest RAE.

His current research includes transient populations in the East of England and the movement of people in the Region of the Baltic States. He is also exploring, with colleagues, emerging patterns of international baby trafficking.

Community Development and Engagement

As chair of the Bedfordshire and Luton Aim Higher Steering Group David regularly engages with local, regional and national structures on behalf of the University.

These range from being a Director of the local Marsh Farm Community Development Trust Board (New Deal), to playing a significant role in developing opportunities for the 2012 Games on behalf of the University.
