Professor Carsten Maple, Head of Department and Professor of Applicable Computing

Professor Maple is Head of the Computer Science and Technology Department and was appointed Professor of Applicable Computing in 2004. He has an international research reputation and extensive experience of institutional strategy development and interacting with external agencies as well as substantial experience of chairing and participating in committees and boards at all levels of an HE institution.
The Department has seen a significantly enhanced engagement with industry including sponsorship of a £10,000 award for the student of the year and a £20,000 award for graduate of the year; secured industry funding of computer laboratories at a value of £60,000 per annum and a further £100,000 per annum for prizes and funded scholarships from a number of industrial partners.

Employment History
Professor Carsten Maple joined the department in March 1998 as a Lecturer, he then made Senior Lecturer in September 1998 and was promoted to Principal Lecturer in January 2001.
Carsten became Head of The Centre for Research in Distributed Technologies in June 2003 and he became Acting Head of the Department in September 2004.
Professor Maple obtained his PhD at the University of Leicester where his thesis was "A Special Method for Solving Hamilton Eigen problems Arising from Ordinary Differential Equations".

Carsten is currently involved in various external projects including:
· Appointed a Professor at North Eastern University, China (2nd best Control Department in China).
