Profile
Professor Jie Zhang, Chair of Wireless Communications and Networks, Head of CWiND (Centre for Wireless Network Design)
Professor Jie Zhang, Chair of Wireless Communications and Networks
Centre for Wireless Network Design

Jie Zhang (jie.zhang@beds.ac.uk) is Professor of Wireless Communications and Networks at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, University of Bedfordshire (UoB), UK. He joined UoB as a Senior Lecturer in 2002, becoming Reader and Professor in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
He received his MEng and PhD degrees from the Department of Automatic Control and Electronic Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology (www.ecust.edu.cn), Shanghai, China.
From 1997 to 2002, he was a Research Fellow with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University College London (UCL), Centre for Process Systems Engineering, Imperial College London, the Department of Engineering Science, Oxford University, and a Software Engineer with Aircom.
He is the founding Director of the Centre for Wireless Network Design, UoB (www.beds.ac.uk/research/irac/cwind), which has become one of the best-funded and leading research groups in wireless network planning and optimization in Europe.
Since 2003, as the Principal Investigator, he has been awarded 17 projects worth over £4.0 million (his share) by the EPSRC, EU FP6/FP7, etc. He has published over 100 journal and conference papers, and is a lead author of the book “Femtocells: Technologies and Deployment”, which was published by Wiley in Jan. 2010.
Teaching Areas
Prof. Zhang teaches the following UG and PG units (modules).
- Parallel and Distributed Computing
- Wireless Communications
- Wireless Networks
- Mobile Network Planning and Design
Research and Publications
Research Interests
- Wireless Communications & Networks: in particular, radio network planning and optimization (indoor, outdoor, and combined indoor and outdoor) and femtocells;
- Parallel/distributed computing: the application of parallel and distributed computing in solving network planning and optimization problems for emerging communications networks.
Recent Grants/Awards
Since 2003, as the Principal Investigator (Scientist-in-charge), he has been awarded 17 projects worth over £4.0 million (his share, the total funding for these projects is about £8.0 million) by the EPSRC, the European Commission (FP6/FP7), the Nuffield Foundation, and the mobile industry.
These projects are centred on new radio propagation models, UMTS/HSPA/WiMAX/LTE simulation, planning and optimization, indoor radio network design and femtocells.
He is the Co-Investigator of the first EPSRC-funded research project on femtocells (EP/F067364/1: “Feasibility study for WiMAX based home Femtocell for indoor coverage”) and a Co-Investigator of EPSRC UK-China Science Bridge Award on 4G Mobile Communications (EP/G021295/1: “UK-China Science Bridges: R&D on 4G Wireless Mobile Communications”).
Publications
Book: “Femtocells: Technologies and Deployment” Wiley, Jan. 2010, ISBN: 978-0470742983. This is the first (and also the only one until August 2010) technical femtocell book that reveals the details of femtocell technologies and deployment.
