The Faculty of Health & Social Sciences offers a range of innovative courses attracting students from a wide variety of backgrounds. You can choose to study from DipHE, foundation degree, undergraduate degree to MSc and PhD levels in a range of subjects.

The Faculty takes a flexible, often work-based, approach to teaching and learning which encourages reflective practice. All teaching and learning is informed by research and grounded in a robust evidence-base.

Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School

Departments

  • Department of Applied Social Studies  is accredited by the National Youth Agency to provide programmes leading to youth and community work qualifications, and by the General Social Care Council for the delivery of social work programmes.
  • Department of Community Services provides education and support to students and practitioners in a range of traditional and innovative healthcare environments. 
  • Department of Acute Health Care delivers undergraduate courses preparing students for registration as Adult Nurses or Operating Department Practitioners. All of our staff hold a professional qualification and have had experience working as health care professionals.
  • Department of Psychology was established in 1993 and its inaugural degree programme, BA Psychology, was accredited by the British Psychological Society in 1995. The MSc Health Psychology received three commendations from the BPS, in 2006, for the quality of our provision and student satisfaction.
  • Division of Sports Therapy delivers degree courses in Sports Therapy in modern well-equipped laboratories.

Research

Research in the Faculty is managed within two research institute.

  • Institute for Health Research focuses on health inequalities, chronic disease management, health policy, organisational development and educational research
  • Institute of Applied Social Research generates research which informs policy and practice in the areas of social work, social care, youth work, special education, young people and their families, vulnerable social groups, youth justice, community safety, and law and professional practice.
