About the Division
Head of Division: Helen Bailey profile...

The Division of Performing Arts
& English based at the Bedford campus is a vibrant, creative and developing
Division with an increasing portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate
courses.
The Division has a strong research culture which develops and
maintains the excellent quality of teaching in its subject areas.
Performing Arts focuses upon contemporary performance practice, enabling students to engage in dance and theatre as separate disciplines, or examine the range of possibilities in bringing the two subjects together.

All courses are strongly supported by the performance programme at the professional theatre on campus.
Our performing arts students also benefit from other on campus facilities such as two large dance studios, which can be used as either practice or performance spaces.

The performing arts staff have expertise in choreography, directing and performance practice, physical theatre, contemporary playwrights, contemporary dance performance, experimental performance, playwriting and screen writing.
The English courses delivered at the Bedford campus offer an ideal balance between traditional and more innovative areas of study, from Shakespeare to African literature, from language acquisition to film adaptation.
English Studies at the Bedford campus is one of the few English courses in the UK that offers a combination of literature, language, and creative writing. The course builds upon the strengths gained from a long tradition of English teaching at Bedford but also incorporates contemporary changes within the subject.
Students recently rated the English programme provided by the Bedford campus as one of the best in Britain.
In the latest National Student Survey, English Studies at Bedford was rated as better than, or as good as, all other English-based programmes that took part in the survey in the areas of teaching, assessment and feedback, and academic support.
Staff in this Division have a strong research profile and regularly publish books and articles in their respective areas of interest, including the study of modernist poetry, language and gender, children’s literature and American literature and creative writing. This ensures that all teaching is underpinned by the latest research findings.
