32 brave students from the University of Bedfordshire walked from Luton to St Albans's cathedral on Easter Monday. The group, formed by people from different faiths or no faith, made a 12- mile journey to experience what English people have been doing for years.
The students, from more than 10 different nations, started their day early in the Tree House, the University Chaplaincy. After a big full English breakfast, everyone was ready for the adventure. This is the second year that the Tree House has organised the pilgrimage walk to St Albans.
It is part of the tradition for church groups from Luton, as well across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, to make their way by foot- but also by car, train and bike- to St Albans. Every year, a service is held in the cathedral to celebrate Jesus resurrection at Easter.
Angela Yewei Wang, a final year student from China, thought the pilgrimage was a good experience as she could get to know people better on the way and learn more about Christianity.
“It was tiring at times, but everything was worth it. The most special thing for me was the service, it really touched me. The cathedral was beautiful, I loved the choir and there was a good atmosphere in there".
The group, led by Peter Adams, volunteer Assistant Chaplain, with colleagues Helen Malcolm and Sue Crane, and accompanied by Revd. Andrew Goodman, Chaplain (Luton campus), left the Tree House at 8.30am and arrived in St Albans at 2.30pm. On the way, they went through Lea Valley cycle path, Harpenden Common, the Childwickbury Estate and Verulam Park.
‘The beauty of the route, the theme of pilgrimage, the singing and storytelling meant the miles fell away quickly and we were soon picnicking in front of the Cathedral’, said Peter.
More than 2,000 people processed into a jam-packed service conducted by the new bishop of St Albans, Rev. Alan Smith, with music led by television’s South Oxhey Community Choir, under Gareth Malone. Everyone was positive, and one comment summed it up:
“The best Easter ever … a wonderful time from morning until end of the day!”
Tree House team was privileged to lead a Memorial Service yesterday for Tian Hao, former student. It was very moving, and students contributed their prayers, musical performances and tributes to Tian who will be much missed. We were honoured by her mother Liping Sun's presence. Details: click
