Donald Forrester worked as a child and family social worker in Inner London
from 1991 to 1999. During this time he worked with many families in which
there was parental substance misuse, and the challenges and opportunities
involved in such work have become a central interest since he became an
academic.

Sarah's social work practice focussed primarily on adults experiencing mental distress who were also homeless and had substance problems. She has worked in both statutory and voluntary sectors before moving into social work research. Through her practice experience she has particular interests in researching alcohol and drugs, particularly in relation to social work education and practice. She also researches in the field of domestic violence and abuse, with particular interest in the overlap of substance use and domestic abuse.

I am working with other members of the TGC on a project involving three local authorities evaluating social work practice. Previously I explored the use of existing large scale datasets to find out more about the factors associated with children entering care. I am also working on other projects which explore substance use by parents of children entering care and older people's alcohol use.
