Summary

The effective integration of in-patient environments for people with a mental illness is essential for the delivery of the National Service Framework for Mental Health (DH, 1999) and related guidance (DH, 2002).

Responding effectively to the national and local guidance relating to acute mental health care requires practitioners to be informed and knowledgeable in contemporary practice.

Practice needs to reflect current research and be evidence-based to ensure that practitioners utilise appropriate skills within this specialist setting. (DH, 2006).
