| Apply: | direct to the University via the NHS Business Unit |
| Start (pt): | February |
| Mode: | part-time |
| Duration: | 1 semester |
| Location: | Butterfield Park campus |

This unit will help you to develop and enhance your knowledge and practical skills of managing clients with complex health needs undergoing surgery. The population is ageing and more are having surgical interventions with various methods of anaesthesia.
The experienced health practitioner will be able to assess the physical and psycho-social needs of clients preparing for and recovering from surgery, assessing the effects of the interactions of multiple diseases and long term conditions on that person’s care. The unit will encourage you to explore the total client’s journey and to analyse the effects of the multi-disciplinary teams offering care, evaluating the process and recommending ways to enhance the service delivery.
Key topics to be covered in the module:
Psychosocial impact of different surgical interventions
Altered body image (stoma, breast, trachea)
Effect of the surgical process on elderly patients
Pathophysiology of different disease processes and their effect on preparation, surgery and recovery (eg Anaemia, long term conditions such as Diabetes Mellitus, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, abnormal ageing.)
Nutritional needs of surgical patients with complex health needs
Available to all health care professionals currently working or placed within a practice environment related to this module.
