| Programme title: | Managing Physical Health Needs in the Surgical Patient |
| Apply: | direct to the University via the NHS Business Unit |
| Start (pt): | September |
| Mode: | part-time |
| Duration: | 1 semester |
| Location: | Luton campus and Partner Institutions |
| Faculty: | Faculty of Health & Social Sciences |
This unit concentrates on the assessment, identification of risks and subsequent management of the physical health needs of the person undergoing surgery. The unit will enhance your surgical care skills in line with changing demands of health care requirements e.g. NHS Plan, Infection prevention and control, NPSA and local requirements. With support from your manager and lecturers you will develop the skills already stated in the assessment criteria and identify two further skills specific to your clinical care that can be further developed so that you can provide expert care to patients. These transferable skills across a range of surgical care settings will enhance your career progression.
In the light of changing service delivery (ever reducing length of stay, increasing older people undergoing surgery and separating elective and trauma surgery) the module will enable staff to develop to meet the changing agendas and transferable workforce needs.
The aim of the module is to develop further your assessment, risk management and clinical judgement skills and to challenge current practice through research, evidence and examples of good practice nationally and internationally to improve the experiences of the patient journey through surgical interventions.
Your learning will be supported through a student centred work based learning approach. The unit is evidence based and related to current local and national agendas. There will be opportunities for you to engage in a variety of learning experiences.
