“Corporate Governance and Firm Performance before
and after the Credit Crunch” supervised by Professor Chin-Bun Tse and Professor Magdy Abdel-Kader
The
current financial crisis which originated from the US sub-prime mortgage crisis
such as American International Group (AIG), 2008 and Lehman Brothers, 2008 puts
executive compensation and board accountability under the spotlight.
It is generally believed that corporate governance in financial institutions contributed significantly to the current credit crunch. Following the financial crisis, corporate governance reforms has been regarded as a top concern for both regulators and practitioners in order to rebuild market trust.
Conscious of this reality as well as the lack of
information on corporate governance and its effect on performance during the
credit crunch, this research seeks to add to the existing
literature by examining the relationship between corporate governance and firm
performance in a sample of UK listed companies from 2004-2010.
This time period
is chosen to evaluate corporate governance and firm performance in the UK listed
companies before and after the credit crunch, with some comparison of results
based on German listed companies.
The focus of this study is on the credit crunch and how it affects CG mechanisms and the related issues of capital market reactions, disclosures, and its determinants.
