Thesis"Performance Management and measurement in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Kenya; an embedded mixed method approach" supervised by Professor Magdy Abdel-Kader.
Over the past several decades non-profit organisations have become major players in internationaldevelopment particularly in developing countries. Theoretical and empirical-scholarly and practitioners-articles, focusing on design, adoption, and use of performance measurement and management systems in non-profit organisations have recently emerged.
Despite the development and adaptation of performance management systems some researchers have reported unsuccessful implementation of comprehensive performance measurement systems in non-governmental organisations. Furthermore, there is limited management accounting research focusing on performance management practices in the voluntary sector compared to research in public and private sectors.
Few studies have investigated determinants of performance management practices and its effects on NGO effectiveness. Therefore, this two-stage embedded mixed method study is to develop a model that explains how performance management (PM) practices affect the NGOs performance in Kenya in order to contribute to the performance literature and practice. In particular, this study endeavour to provide empirical evidence of PM practices that influence NGOs performance beyond the rhetoric of PM.
The initial stage of the study will involve an exploratory study using secondary data, focused group discussions and interviews to understand the key constructs and build a valid and reliable survey instrument. Thereafter the researcher will use a cross-sectional research design to gather primary data.
The population of the study will be 6075 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Kenya. Multi-stage stratified sampling will be used to select a sample of 546 NGOs that will give the needed information. A series of self-administered questionnaires will be distributed to the sampled NGOs.
Data analysis will include descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling using Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) 18 software will be used to test hypotheses. The data will be presented in tables and figures.
