Profile

Claire Kane

Claire Kane, Practice Educator - Adult Acute

RN BSc Hons

Since qualifying, I have worked in Accident & Emergency and Operating Theatres.

Prior to general nursing I qualified as a dental nurse at Guy’s Hospital, London in 1984 where I worked in the Oral & Maxillo Facial Operating Theatre before working at the Royal Dental Hospital in Leicester Square, London.

Following on I trained as a medical photographer and was based at the London Hospital in Whitechapel.

I hold qualifications in Accident & Emergency Nursing, Advanced Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support nursing.

I am currently studying for the MSc in advanced nursing studies.

I hold an honorary contract in the Trust and work in the A & E department on a regular basis to maintain my clinical competencies.

Teaching

I have developed my teaching profile by undertaking the Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PgCAP). I am a registered nurse teacher with the NMC.

I teach on the post registration A & E course and am the unit lead for history taking and assessment. I am also involved in teaching on the pre-registration nursing course.

The role of Practice Educator is an exciting opportunity to support both student nurses and mentors in facilitating best practice in the clinical setting.

I am responsible for supporting mentors in 26 clinical practice areas and do this by visiting the trust sites every month and also by undertaking annual educational audits.

Practice Educators support student nurses by facilitating Student Support Groups (SSG).

The SSG’s are cohort specific and address issues that arise in clinical practice. We also encourage the student nurses to reflect on their experiences in a confidential and supportive environment.

The student nurses respond positively to these meetings and rate them as excellent sources of learning and support.

As a Practice Educator I am involved in teaching skills to pre-registration students.

Feedback received from the student nurses has indicated that they value these practical sessions and that they feel better prepared for their clinical placements.

Practice Educators teach skills that include bed making, injection skills, wound care, aseptic techniques, catheter care, basic life support, vital signs, IV set up, VIP scores – to name a few!

We are also involved in teaching on the Mentorship in Professional Practice course (MSPP) and also on the MSPP updates.

As a result of work undertaken by Deborah Flynn and me on supporting students in clinical practice, we have presented our results at the Royal College of Nursing conference in Blackpool.

I am currently involved in a research project focusing on nursing students with specific learning differences.
