I began my nurse training in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1986, qualifying in 1990.
After qualifying, I worked on various surgical units including theatre and recovery.
In 1992, I left South Africa to travel through Scandinavia, Russia and the USA where I gained a tremendous amount of personal experience.
From 1993 through to 2001, I worked all over Europe as a trained nurse. Work positions included a medical gastro-intestinal ward, cardio-thoracic unit, high dependency unit and oncological gastro-intestinal unit in Germany. I also worked in a gynaecological unit in Switzerland.
In 2002, I returned to the UK where I worked on an Acute Stroke Unit, before moving to the University of Bedfordshire in 2005.
My role as Practice Educator is multifaceted allowing me to work both in theoretical and practical domains of nursing.
I work with both students and mentors in preparation for clinical placements and assessments.
My areas include clinical skills teaching across the three years of the pre-registration nursing programme, and teaching on the NMC approved mentor course.
Working on the Practice Educator model of student support founded within the Mental Health Nursing Field of Practice, I have developed a model of student support groups within the Adult Field of Practice which encourages students to integrate theory and practice but also acts as a forum for shared experiences.
In February 2008 I co-presented at the RCN Practice Education Conference
In September 2009 I presented a poster at the Deustche Berufsverband fuer Krankenpflege Conference in Ulm, Germany. This poster represented an evaluation of the implementation of the above mentioned student support groups.
My interests include travelling, languages, green issues and Wildlife conservation.
