I have worked at the University as a lecturer in both Operating Department Practice and nursing for the past 16 months, and have been fortunate to be actively involved in the transition to the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences' new home at Butterfield Park.
Previous to my employment by the University I worked at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust as the Practice Development Co-ordinator for all aspects of peri-operative care.
My interest in health care started at an early age as I have always been keen to be involved in the care of others. At the age of 18 I began my health care career as a student nurse based at Bedford Hospital and as a student of the University of Luton.
On successful completion of my nurse training I was offered my first job opportunity as a qualified staff nurse in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (or “Recovery” as it was known way back then!).
My exposure to the operating department was minimal throughout my nurse training but I felt it was an area that interested me, and I was correct.
As my career as a nurse progressed I felt the need to develop a full understanding of the whole peri-operative experience.
I therefore undertook my training in Operating Department Practice (ODP) at Moulton College in Northamptonshire.
This training enabled me to not only fully develop my understanding of all aspects of peri-operative care but it also gave me an insight into other areas of practice which necessitate specialist health care professionals.
On completion of my ODP training I returned to practice at Bedford hospital as a dual qualified practitioner in nursing and operating department practice and began my role as Practice Development Practitioner.
This role enabled me to develop my teaching ability as a dual qualified professional.
The experiences I have gained through being a student and a qualified practitioner have provided me with a firm knowledge base to fulfil the role I am now in.
Outside of work my main interests revolve around sport; some of which I must admit are just as a spectator!
I am a keen netball player and play twice a week in a rather poor attempt to stay fit and am captain of the darts team.
My sporting passion though is football (this is the spectator sport if you hadn’t guessed) and I can quite often be heard for miles around shouting at the television if Liverpool FC aren’t playing well!
