Judith Chappell

Profile

Judith Chappell, Head of Department

Judith Chappell

I have been involved within higher education of health professionals for over 25 years.

I joined the University of Bedfordshire in October 2007, have spent the past 15 years at the University of Hertfordshire. The previous ten years were in Manchester.

Key features of my experience include collaboration with academic, administrative, clinical, commissioning and professional body colleagues; management within the Department and Faculty; contribution to University committees and a comprehensive understanding of programme development and quality assurance in higher education.

Over the past five years as an academic manager, I have broadened my experience working with colleagues from all areas of the University.

I have taken a lead in learning and teaching, employability and entrepreneurship within the curriculum, inter-professional education as well as student recruitment and retention at both Faculty and Department level.

Teaching interests

I have taught all aspects of undergraduate physiotherapy with particular interest in human anatomy and neuro-musculoskeletal disorders.

At post graduate level, I have taught anatomy, clinical reasoning and research methods. More recently my interests lie in medical ethics, professionalism and management; all of which have a multi-professional relevance.

Research interests

These are within the management arena. My MBA (2007) dissertation was titled, ‘Soft Systems Methodology – an effective management tool or a management sop?’

I am interested in change management and ways of influencing change.

Professional activities

I am a registered with the Health Professions Council and am a partner, serving on investigative, and conduct and competency committees.

I was a reviewer with the Quality Assurance Agency covering Physiotherapy and Sports Science.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Prior to entering academia, I was a senior community paediatric physiotherapist.

I then developed expertise in sports physiotherapy; attending the Commonwealth Games in 1986 and the World Netball Championship in 1995.

From 1984 until 1992 I was the Physiotherapist with the England Women’s’ Hockey Squad.

Other Interests

Family and friends are very important to me and I enjoy spending time with them.

Vegetarian cooking has to be high on my list of pleasurable activities.

I am a recent convert to gardening and find spending a while in the garden is therapeutic after a day’s work, as is reading the growing collection of books and trying to learn the Latin plant names!

I enjoy walking and have walked the ‘Moon Walk’ through London at night raising money for breast cancer and participated in ‘Walking New York’ for the Children’s Society.
