Prof Alan Marlow

Profile

Alan Marlow QPM, BSc, FRSA, Visiting Professor

Professor Alan Marlow

I joined the University in 1994 upon retirement from Bedfordshire Police, where I held the rank of Chief Superintendent.  I am a graduate of the London School of Economics.

In 1985, I was seconded as a Visiting Professor to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York, USA.

John Pitts and I established the Vauxhall Centre for the Study of Crime and developed the University’s criminology programme.

I ceased full-time employment with the University in 2002 and I am now a Visiting Professor.

I supervise students while they prepare their final year dissertations and I manage the Level 3 module ‘Current Issues in Criminal Justice’.

I am also engaged in contract research.

My publications include the books:

  • Planning Safer Communities (with John Pitts) Russell House 1998
  • Young People, Drugs and Community Safety (with Geoffrey Pearson) Russell House 1999
  • After Macpherson: Policing After the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry (with Barry Loveday) Russell House 2000

I research policing and criminal justice issues for police and other agencies.

From 2002 to 2006 I edited The Community Safety Journal published by Pavilion Publishing.

My most recent research projects concerned evaluations of projects to improve local policing, the reduction of offending by prolific offenders and factors affecting equality of outcomes in crime detection
