I have lead
responsibility for the undergraduate Social Work students on the Luton campus.
I
teach on both the undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, with a particular
interest in the social science underpinnings of Social Work knowledge,
especially Social Policy.
I also teach
on the Working with Difference and Diversity, Ethics and Values and
Cross-Cultural Perspectives modules.
I have a strong commitment to enabling students to develop skills and knowledge in dealing with social work’s diverse constituency.
As a former
Probation Officer, I bring to my teaching a wealth of practice experience,
drawn from a variety of areas, including Court Work and inter-agency working.
I am also an assessor on the GSCC Post-qualifying Award in Child Care, supporting and enabling experienced practitioners to continue to develop their professional knowledge and practice competence.
I have a student
centred approach to teaching and learning which reflects the fact that I undertook
my own professional training as a ‘mature student’, entering Social Work as a
second career.
Having spent most of my
working life as a farmer and running my own business, I recognise the
opportunities that attending University later in life offers.
I am keen to continue to offer this
opportunity to others.
I have taught in Higher Education since 1995 and joined the University of Bedfordshire on a full time basis in 2005.
My research interests lie in the area of Social Work education, including the teaching and learning of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice (with Amanda Thorpe) and in the support needs of students entering Higher Education from non-traditional backgrounds (with Kathryn Ellis).
