Professional Background

My professional practice based background has involved a broad range of opportunities and experiences located both within the Voluntary and Statutory sectors.

This has included;

  • generic youth and community work-centre based,
  • detached and outreach,
  • rural youth work,
  • school based youth and community work,
  • community development practice,
  • specialised and specifically focused; young women and the judiciary system, counselling and support within women’s crisis centre’s.

Teaching interests

I am actively involved in all aspects of the Youth and Community Work programme, and can and do deliver a variety of modules that include other academic areas; social work, health and social care, child and adolescent studies.

My specialist areas include:

  • One to One and Group Work Practices,
  • ADP,
  • Experiential Learning; application of theory to practice,
  • Community Work,
  • Health Education in Action,
  • Social Policy and the Welfare State.

Research Interests relevant to Youth and Community Work

  • Development of Youth Councils, and Parish Forums.
  • Rurality issues for young people, rural poverty and unemployment.
  • Civic Association, New Labour, Impacts for Community Work.
  • Rurality, Young People and Political Participation.
  • Development of Community Work Training Opportunities.
  • Policy Development and Implementation, Codes of Practice and Youth Work
  • The adoption and implementation of a broader range of assessment strategies in Higher Education; does this raise standards?

  • 2003-2005: External Examiner for Connexions Programmes at Sunderland University.
