I am the Field Chair for the Field of Applied Social Studies responsible for the organisation, standards and general smooth running of the degree awards of Applied Social Studies, Child and Adolescent Studies, Criminology and Health and Social Care. I am also Award Manager for Criminology – a task that is directly related to my teaching and research interests.
I teach on the Criminology programmes at
all levels, and in particular I teach the Level One introductory modules, Introduction
to Crime and Deviance and Introduction to the Criminal Justice System.
As Criminology Award Manager, I have an interest in the personal development of criminology students through a system of personal tutorials and seminars. This interest helps me to get to know the students well, and I believe that the teaching staff and students form a group with a passion for their subject.
Together with the criminology teaching team, I am committed to making criminology an exciting and relevant area of study and the team arranges for a programme of guest speakers and trips to enhance the learning experience.
My research areas are related to the study of
Policing and the Criminal Justice System with particular reference to Ireland. I have
published on the prosecution process in nineteenth century Ireland, and am
currently working on the Irish Grand Jury system
