I came to Higher Education late having not completed my A-levels at school.
At the age of 27, as a mature student and a single parent, I went back to full time education.
Firstly I completed a GNVQ Advanced in Health and Social Care and an A-Level in Sociology.
I found that Sociology was my passion so I went on to study for a degree (BA hons) in Sociology at Goldsmiths College London.
Throughout my studies I specialised in Post Structural Feminism and wrote my final year dissertation on whether popular psychology empowers women to leave domestic violent relationships.
From graduation in 2000 I went into teaching at Further Education for 3 years and taught on a range of different courses from A-level to HND Level.
I wanted to leave teaching and concentrate on research so I enrolled on a Masters degree Programme.
In 2003 I completed a full time MA whilst teaching in Criminology at Goldsmiths College London.
Throughout my Masters I specialised in female crime and deviance.
For my final dissertation I looked at 'Women and Binge Drinking' in response to the governments fears of the increases in alcohol and violent crime.
I joined the University in 2004 to work as a researcher on a DFES 2-year funded piece of research that was looking at ‘Educating Difficult Adolescents Away from Home’.
