Masterclass with Del Brown

Master mixer Del directs his young media apprentices

Del Brown and media students

There’s no need to shop around - media students at the University of Bedfordshire have already been mixing with the best.

Live studio director/vision mixer Del Brown has given two exciting masterclasses to TV Production and Media Performance students this term.

His credits include QVC - The Shopping Channel, and launch director for Express Shopping Channel and Jackpot TV. He has also directed live broadcasts for the London G20 Summit last year and the recent Afghanistan conference among others.

The TV Production level one students directed the cameras and presenters while vision mixing, ‘calling the shots’ and timing the show as if they were on a live TV production.

One, Danny Baker, said: “I learnt that live TV is very fast paced and takes a lot of multi-tasking.

“The class made me realise that I need to make sure I concentrate and learn all I can about different roles so I can get ahead in the industry.”

And the Media Performance level two students were taught how to demonstrate a product, talk to time and interview an expert in the style of QVC - The Shopping Channel.

One, Rosie Benjamin, said: “Working with a QVC director was so beneficial; it gives us an insight into how it is in the real world. I learnt about talking to time, being live on television and prompting the guest to get the most out of them.”

Kathryn Wolfe, Senior Lecturer in Media Performance and Senior Lecturer and Course Leader TV Production, said: “The two masterclasses gave both sets of students a realistic sense of what it’s like to be in the hot seat.

“In shopping channels, the director does all the jobs on their own, while the presenter is reacting to instructions via their ear-piece - true multi-skilling!”
