Ausra Kupliauskaite: BA Hons Graphic Design

Ausra Kupliauskaite

BA Hons Graphic Design 2008

Ausra Kupliauskaite

Graphic Design student, Ausra Kupliauskaite has landed her dream job as the main designer on a Lithuanian daily newspaper - Kauno Diena – after giving it a completely new design as part of her final year project for her degree. The new look newspaper has now gone into production, and was also displayed as part of the annual Art and Design show, run by the University.

Ausra says : “For my major project I got the opportunity to redesign one of Lithuania’s newspapers. It’s called Kauno Diena (Kuanas Day). Kuana is the second biggest city in my country and it’s going to be even more popular as some famous editors from the main Lithuanian national newspapers have come to work in Kauno Diena.

“Hermis Capital, the company who own Kauno Diena, recently bought the main daily newspaper of Lithuania’s harbour city – Klaipeda. I’ve been employed by them as the only designer of all these newspapers, straight from the Graphic Design degree here at the University of Bedfordshire. But of course in the near future they will hire people to help me.”

She adds: “There have been many problems for me to solve as a designer, for example, there has to be as many stories as possible, even on the front page, which I’m not so keen on. On the other hand, the editors want it to look contemporary and modern, so the hardest part is to balance the ‘conservative’ and ‘modern’.

“The new design will be published in July [2008] but now I am going to Lithuania to meet the designer of the New York Times, whose roots are in Lithuania.”

Ausra concludes: “I’m very excited that I am a part of those big changes in the newspapers history, and I hope that conservative Lithuanians who are afraid of any changes for the daily won’t be shocked too much.”

Interview took place in 2008.
